What Do I Do If I Feel My Child Is Delayed?

Watching your child grow and develop can be fun and exciting, along with terrifying and unsettling.  You will find many helpful developmental milestone tools under the resource section on this website that can help assist you track timely milestones for your child.

But, one must realize that all children do develop at their own pace.  It is very common to have a child range in development from developing early by a few months to developing later than expected by a few months. 

As a parent, if you feel, or someone has suggested to you, that your child is falling behind in development you can get your child screened for FREE.

If your child is 0 to 3 years old, contact Fairfield Co. Help Me Grow. (740) 681-4881.  Their staff can discuss your concerns and determine how to follow up.

If your child is 3 to 5 years old (preschool years), it is up to your local school district to screen your child to determine if your child would benefit from individualized special education services.  Your local district number is listed under “contact us” on this website.  The school district staff can then assist on how to proceed with your concerns.

Preschool services are only provided when the disability has an adverse effect on education.  Areas that can be tested:

  • Social/emotional

  • Cognition (academic skills)

  • Adaptive (self help skills)

  • Speech and language

  • Fine motor skills

  • Large motor skills

  • Vision skills
